The idea of a zombie apocalypse may seem absurd. Even as we type this, we realise how insane we must seem. But hear us out. Because actually, we think that simply taking a few minutes to consider how your insurance might protect you in the face of extreme scenarios, it can actually make everyday risks easier to understand.
So, let’s do a little exercise. Let’s imagine…
If zombies tried to take over the world, what cover would you need?
1. Your home = your fortress
Starting strong, we’re going to consider your home. Essentially, your home is about to become your fortress, right? The vulnerable points would be your windows, doors, boundary fencing or walls, the roof, and the guttering. Maybe there are other things, but that’s just off the top of our heads.
In this case, if you were looking to cover zombie-related damages, like broken windows or barricade repairs, the king’s royal buildings insurance would be needed.
It’s also what you’d need if you were to claim for damages as a result of a falling tree, massive storm, fire, or a break-in.
2. Let’s get personal
When we say personal, we mean personal injuries. As you can imagine, fighting off zombies is dangerous work. Accidental injury cover could make sure you get compensation for any mishaps on your zombie-fighting journey. Similar, if say, a friend came over and tripped on your rug and broke their leg. This policy could help cover the medical costs.
3. Life insurance (with a zombie clause)
Does getting turned into a zombie count as death? We reckon so, and if just to be sure, we also reckon that you’d need to make sure that your life insurance policy includes clear wording on undead transformations. In a world where there are no zombies, this logic still stands, in that you should read your life insurance policy docs to make sure that you know what’s included and what isn’t. Some life policies include cover for the funeral while others don’t.
The last thing you want is for your loved ones to find this out as they’re dealing with your loss.
4. Fully loaded car insurance
In a zombie apocalypse, your car would become your lifeline, your means of escape. And you’d most likely not be driving like a good little sausage. You’d be cruising through through roadblocks and rough terrain to get to safety.
You definitely want to make sure that your car is insured for all possible hazards. We kind of think that we would ramp up the cover on our 4×4 insurance? Those all-terrain vehicles require a really tough and ready approach to insurance (which is what the king offers), so we’d probably make a few adjustments here and there to this policy if we wanted to include cover for zombie apocalypse-related damage.
The king’s got your back, your bakkie, and your stuff
While zombies are fictional (we hope), this thought experiment highlights the importance of comprehensive insurance for all the things that you value. Being prepared for the unimaginable can help you face more realistic disasters with peace of mind.
