Ah, year-end holidays! That glorious time when you’ve finally left work emails behind and all you have to worry about is… Well, everything else. Whether you’re vacationing or staycationing, this is no time to let your guard down. Between prepping your getaway or securing the homestead, and ensuring you’ve left no valuables at risk, the to-do list is no joke.
Here’s a guide to help you stay ahead of the game while keeping things merry and bright.
Heading for the bush or beach?
1. Give your home that ‘lived in’ look. A light timer or trusted house sitter can give the appearance of activity at home. Confirm that your buildings and home contents insurance are up to date and in order. If the paw-paw hits the fan, you can help make sure that your insurer has your back if you’ve kept your end of the commitment.
2. Batten down the hatches. Turn off your geyser and ensure that your security systems are fully functional. For added peace of mind, consider adding layers to your basic measures, like additional outdoor lighting, beams, and security cameras. If your insurer has made specific security measures a condition of your cover, they need to be in full working order. If not, a claim may not be paid.
3. Be a social media secret agent. Everyone loves a good holiday pic but, even more than that, thieves love social posts that show when homes are unoccupied. Adjust your privacy settings so that only trusted friends can view your, well, view… And so that your home isn’t inadvertently advertised as empty.
4. Get road-ready. Nothing ruins a holiday faster than car trouble. Make sure that your car, trailer, and caravan are in top shape before heading out. And by ‘tip top’, we mean roadworthy and ready to go the distance. Also check that your insurance has all your stuff covered and, while you’re at it, read up on the emergency assist services you may benefit from. At King Price, we offer roadside, accident and medical assist, and we also have agreements with trusted towing companies for you to use if things don’t quite go according to plan. Staying home? Here’s how to stay safe
5. Make sure your valuables make it back home. While out shopping or playing social butterfly, keep your wallet and phone secure (i.e. not in your back pocket or on a restaurant table) and avoid leaving purchases valuables in visible places in your car.
6. Be alarmed to prevent panic. Set your house alarm and lock up properly, even if you’re only going to be out for a few minutes. Prime time holiday time is unfortunately also prime time for break-ins.
7. Stay off the hard stuff. It may seem obvious, but the holidays always see a spike in drunk driving incidents. Nominate a designated driver, books a king’s cab, or use Uber.
8. Spread some cheer. True holiday spirit lies in giving back. Consider helping those in need by donating, volunteering, or joining a local outreach initiative.
That all being said, from King Price to you and yours, enjoy the festive season with peace of mind, a bit of planning, and a lot of holiday cheer!
