It’s the festive season in South Africa… That special time when half the country switches to holiday mode while the other half stays at work to keep things running. Hint: King Price is open for business as always, except on the public holidays.
As everyone gets ready to hit the road or settle in for a little R&R, let’s make sure we don’t let silly season live up to its name. Here are our top tips to keep your holidays merry, bright, and absolutely free from unwanted surprises.
1. Keep your home cosy, even when you’re not there. Install a light timer or employ a trusted house sitter to keep your home looking occupied. Also, double-check your buildings and home contents insurance, just in case. We hope you don’t need to, but you might just thank us for this reminder if you have to submit a claim.
2. Double down on defence. Layer up on security: Electric fencing, outside lighting, burglar bars, and if possible, web-linked cameras for remote monitoring. We know it’s not as binge-worthy as Insta videos, but it’s so worth it. If you can’t invest in security, check whether your insurer has made certain precautions a condition of cover and make sure that they are always in proper working order.
3. Social media: Friend or foe? Enjoy sharing your holiday moments with friends, but adjust your privacy settings to avoid advertising an empty home to all and sundry.
4. The ultimate road trip prep. Check your car’s tyres, wheel alignment, brakes, windscreen and wipers, engine fluids… You know the drill. And do we really to say that if anything needs to be replaced or repaired, do so before you hit the road? Remember, an unroadworthy vehicle could invalidate your insurance cover and affect a claim.

5. Protect what’s precious Stay vigilant when shopping or socialising. Don’t leave valuables like phones or shopping bags visible in your car, and avoid carrying them in easy-to-reach pockets.
6. Don’t be silly, use your security. Lock up, set alarms, and don’t leave security to chance even if you’re just popping out to the garage convenience store. Letting your guard down, even if only for a few minutes, could mean you’re letting criminals get in and out of your property and home quickly and easily. And, if you’re having guests over, be the best host and organise safe parking for them if you can.
7. Arrive alive. Make smart decisions around drinking and driving. Not only is it illegal to drink alcohol and then drive, doing so could result in damage, injury… Or worse. Both the police and your insurer will be very unhappy with a drunk driving incident. It may end up in a court case, or in an insurance claim being rejected. Be smart: Call a ride or arrange for a designated driver to get you home safely.
8. Give back
Christmas isn’t just about gifts; it’s about giving. Consider helping those less fortunate by volunteering, donating, or participating in community projects. It’s called spreading smiles, and it’s contagious.
Above all, being responsible helps ensure peace of mind. From the king of insurance to you and your family, please enjoy your holiday season and be safe out there!
